FORT McMURRAY — There is still time for residents to weigh in on what they want police to focus on in the coming year, with public engagement now underway to help shape the Wood Buffalo RCMP priorities for 2026-27.
The annual process is designed to ensure local concerns help guide policing priorities alongside day-to-day responses to calls for service. Residents can take part through a short online poll, a longer survey, or by speaking directly with officers during pop-up events and door-to-door visits in rural communities.
The engagement opened Jan. 5 and runs through Feb. 25. During that time, RCMP members are scheduled to attend a series of community events across the region, including pop-ups at MacDonald Island Park, Peter Pond Mall and WinterPlay, as well as outreach at a Fort McMurray Oil Barons home game and the Golden Years Society.
Rural door-to-door engagement is also taking place throughout the consultation period, with additional in-person opportunities expected to be added as they are confirmed.
The quick poll asks participants to rank policing priorities for the 2026-27 year, while the full survey allows for more detailed feedback on safety concerns and community expectations. A short video explaining the process is also available online.
Officials stress the consultation is for general feedback only and is not intended for reporting crimes. Emergencies should be directed to 911, while non-emergency police matters can be reported by phone. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
The feedback will be used to develop the RCMP annual policing priorities, which are expected to be released in the spring of 2026 in partnership with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
More information on how to participate, including links to the survey and engagement schedule, is available through the municipal website.
