FORT McMURRAY — Daytime load limits will be in effect Wednesday on winter roads serving northern communities in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo because of warm weather conditions.
The municipality says traffic on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and the La Loche Winter Trail will be restricted to light vehicles weighing no more than 5,000 kilograms from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 4.
Officials say the temporary restriction is needed to reduce damage to the winter road surfaces during warmer daytime temperatures.
After 10 p.m., allowable weights will increase to 45,000 kilograms on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road and 27,500 kilograms on the La Loche Winter Trail.
The municipality is advising drivers to follow posted signage, drive to conditions and expect rough travel over the next several days.
Heavy vehicles such as fuel trucks and semi trailers are required to obtain permits before using the winter roads. The municipality is urging operators to submit permit applications as early as possible to avoid delays.
More information on winter road conditions, permits and safety tips is available through the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo website. Road users can also call the Winter Road Hotline at 1-866-743-6111 or sign up for email updates.
