EDMONTON — The Alberta New Democratic Party has scheduled a series of candidate nomination meetings in key ridings as incumbent MLAs move to secure their party’s backing ahead of the next provincial vote.
According to the party’s website, nomination meetings are set for Edmonton-Glenora on March 3, Calgary-Elbow on March 4, Calgary-Klein on March 5, Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview on March 6 and Calgary-Edgemont on March 7. All five ridings are currently held by NDP MLAs seeking re-election.
Former health minister Sarah Hoffman is running for the nomination in Edmonton-Glenora, a seat she has held since 2015.
First-term MLA Samir Kayande is listed as the sole candidate seeking the nomination in Calgary-Elbow.
In Calgary-Klein, MLA Lizette Tejada is seeking a second term.
MLA Peggy Wright is running for the nomination in Edmonton-Beverly-Clareview after first being elected in 2023.
In Calgary-Edgemont, MLA Julia Hayter is also seeking renomination.
The next provincial election is scheduled for October 2027. With the United Conservative Party holding a relatively small majority in the legislature, the NDP appears to be positioning itself for an early campaign should the government fall on a confidence vote or call an early writ.
