EDMONTON — Alberta RCMP Traffic Services are urging motorists to slow down and follow the rules of the road after officers stopped a vehicle travelling at nearly double the posted speed limit north of Airdrie earlier this month.
Mounties say an officer conducting traffic enforcement on the QE II Highway on the morning of Feb. 8 stopped a vehicle travelling at 178 kilometres per hour. Police say two children were seated in the back seat without seatbelts.
The driver was issued three summonses and is scheduled to appear in court in March.
RCMP say excessive speed combined with the failure to properly use seatbelts significantly increases the risk of serious injury or death, calling the behaviour dangerous and unacceptable.
Traffic Services are reminding drivers across Alberta, including on Highway 63, to obey posted speed limits, ensure all occupants are properly restrained, avoid using handheld devices while driving and never operate a vehicle while impaired.
Police say RCMP have responded to 19 fatal collisions across Alberta so far in 2026, resulting in 21 deaths.
