FORT McMURRAY. — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has appointed Andrew Boutilier as its new chief administrative officer, effective March 9.
The municipality announced the appointment Wednesday following what it described as a competitive recruitment process.
Boutilier, a longtime Fort McMurray resident, currently serves as chief business officer with Bouchier. He brings more than 20 years of senior leadership experience in the region’s industrial and energy sectors, including previous roles with Syncrude Canada Ltd., Suncor and CEDA International.
Mayor Sandy Bowman said council has confidence in Boutilier’s ability to guide the organization as it moves forward with its next strategic plan following approval of the 2026 budget.
“We are well-positioned as a region and as a Municipality, and we are focused on the opportunities we share together,” Bowman said in a statement. “Andrew understands this community and brings the experience to lead that work.”
Boutilier said he has called Fort McMurray–Wood Buffalo home for 48 years and looks forward to advancing council’s priorities and delivering services to residents.
“I’m truly excited to lead the organization and work alongside our staff to advance Council’s priorities, deliver high-quality services to residents, and continue moving forward the projects and programs that make this region such a great place to call home,” he said.
Jody Butz has served as interim chief administrative officer over the past year during the transition. Butz, a member of Regional Emergency Services for nearly 25 years, has been fire chief since 2017 and also serves as director of emergency management.
Bowman thanked Butz for providing steady leadership and maintaining service delivery during the transition period.
