FORT McMURRAY — The Wood Buffalo Community Foundation will hold its second annual Building Legacy, Building Community event next month to honour two Métis leaders whose work helped shape the region, while launching a $1 million corporate fundraising challenge to support Indigenous initiatives.
The event is scheduled for March 21 at SMS Equipment Place and will celebrate the legacies of Michael Cardinal and Hector “Mickey” Demers, described by the foundation as community builders who established their lives and businesses in Wood Buffalo and were committed to giving back.
In conjunction with the evening, the Wood Buffalo Community Foundation is establishing a permanent endowment fund in their honour and has set a $1 million goal through a corporate challenge.
Two local companies have already committed funds. Bouchier has pledged $250,000, while A.P.E. Maintenance Ltd. has committed $100,000.
Foundation chair Nicole Bourque-Bouchier said the organization is grateful to the Demers and Cardinal families for allowing the legacies to be celebrated, adding their leadership and generosity continue to inspire efforts to build a stronger future in the region.
A.P.E. Maintenance chief executive Melanie Antoine said supporting the foundation’s work will help ensure the pair’s legacy of generosity and community spirit continues to benefit Wood Buffalo.
Corporations, organizations and community leaders are being invited to participate in the challenge, with funds earmarked to support Indigenous initiatives in the region for future generations.
Tickets for the Building Legacy, Building Community event are now on sale through the foundation’s website.
