FORT McMURRAY — Winter maintenance crews in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo are set to activate additional snow plowing zones next week as snow clearing continues across the community.
The municipality says Winter Maintenance Subzones 3 and 4 will be active from Feb. 16 to 20, with on street parking restrictions in effect daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Vehicles left in active zones are subject to a $120 notice of violation and towing fees.
Snow removal will also continue in Subzones 1 and 2 where temporary no parking signs are posted. Officials say the signs are placed 24 hours before scheduled work and vehicles must be removed until the signs are taken down.
Over the weekend, crews are scheduled to clear snow from busier primary, secondary and tertiary roads in Abasand, Timberlea and the downtown core.
The municipality notes snow plowing differs from snow removal. Plowing pushes snow to the side or centre of the road to maintain at least one traffic lane and allow for parking, while snow removal involves hauling snow to disposal sites and typically occurs once or twice each winter due to the added time and resources required.
Winter maintenance in Subzones 1 and 2 is expected to resume during the next scheduled activation from Feb. 23 to 27.
Residents are encouraged to monitor municipal updates and check their zone information online.
