(3:15 A.M. update) — A serious crash involving two semi trucks on Highway 63 has left one driver dead and another in critical condition.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say the collision happened around 3:50 p.m. on February 19, and both trucks had major damage. One driver, a 46‑year‑old man from Wetaskiwin, later died, while the other was airlifted for treatment.
Police say road conditions may have played a role. The highway has reopened, and RCMP offer condolences to the family.
ORIGINAL STORY: FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers are on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision involving two semi trucks on Highway 63.
Police say the crash happened in the southbound lanes near mile marker 163 in the Chard area, several kilometres north of the northbound Algar Tower rest stop.
Highway 63 southbound is closed until further notice, and traffic is being diverted. RCMP are asking the public to avoid the area and follow directions from emergency crews on scene.
Police say an update is expected once more information becomes available or when the highway reopens. Motorists are advised to check Alberta 511 for current road conditions.
