FORT McMURRAY — A community fast a thon held Feb. 21 at the Fort McMurray Islamic Centre drew hundreds of Muslims and non Muslims for an evening focused on health, wellbeing, reflection and community connection.
Organizers say the event brought together residents from across the region to promote empathy, wellbeing and support for one another through fasting and shared discussion.
The program included presentations exploring the spiritual and personal benefits of fasting, along with broader conversations about community care and overall wellbeing. Attendees later gathered to break the fast together, creating what organizers described as a strong sense of unity and belonging.
A panel discussion rounded out the evening, with community representatives and local organizations examining ways to strengthen community supports and collaboration across the region.
In a statement, the mayor’s office said members of council were honoured to attend the event and thanked organizers for creating a space where people from different backgrounds could gather in understanding and reflection. The statement described the gathering as a reflection of the region’s diversity, compassion and commitment to inclusion, adding participation offered a deeper appreciation for values such as empathy, service and community connection.
Organizers say the event highlighted the role faith communities and local partnerships can play in encouraging dialogue, promoting wellbeing and building stronger social connections.
