Winter Maintenance Zones, RMWB image
FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is reminding residents about significant changes to winter road maintenance as crews continue clearing streets following last week’s record snowfall.
The municipality says additional plowing of Winter Maintenance Zone streets began Feb. 20 and will continue daily until all areas are completed. During this period, the regular maintenance schedule has been suspended and new on street parking restrictions are in effect to allow crews to work more quickly.
Parking restrictions are being introduced in phases by subzone, with each area facing a minimum two day period where residents must move vehicles off the street until plowing is finished and driveway windrows are removed. Officials say progress could take longer depending on new snowfall, extreme cold and the number of parked vehicles, adding some streets may be skipped if access is blocked.
Crews will also carry out snow removal on selected streets once plowing is complete, with temporary no parking signs posted at least 24 hours in advance. Municipal officials say snow hauling will not occur on the same day a street is plowed.
The municipality says additional crews and equipment have been brought in to help accelerate clearing and prepare for spring melt conditions, while priority maintenance continues on higher traffic routes.
Residents are being asked to clear sidewalks and driveways, keep garbage bins off the street and avoid blocking access for plows. The regular Winter Maintenance Zone schedule will resume once snow removal is completed across all areas.
Officials encourage residents to monitor municipal updates online and through digital signs for the latest information on zone progress and restrictions.
