FORT McMURRAY — Organizers have cancelled the Shootout on the Snye hockey tournament at WinterPLAY due to extreme cold and dangerous wind chills, citing safety concerns for players and spectators.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says several teams had already withdrawn, affecting scheduling and participation. Forecasted temperatures were expected to fall below the event’s safety threshold of minus 28 C, leading officials to call off the tournament.
Environment Canada had issued a cold weather warning, with wind chill values expected to dip below minus 30 C. Organizers say the decision was not made lightly but safety remained the top priority for players, volunteers, referees and staff.
Registered players as of Feb. 20 will receive refunds next week.
While the hockey tournament has been cancelled, WinterPLAY activities are continuing, with many events moving ahead inside heated warm up tents. Scheduled activities include board games, crafts, maple syrup treats, pancake breakfasts and a themed Glow Skate night. Leisure skating can still be booked at participants’ discretion.
Organizers say some outdoor attractions, including horse drawn wagon rides, may also be cancelled depending on weather conditions.
Officials are reminding residents to dress in layers, wear warm gloves and boots, and watch for signs of frostbite, including numbness or skin discolouration.
