FORT McMURRAY — Southbound travel on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be temporarily closed early Friday as another wide load carrying modular homes moves north, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says.
The municipality says a third load transporting two modular homes is scheduled to travel north on Feb. 27, prompting a closure of southbound traffic between Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray from 12:01 a.m. until 10 a.m. Northbound motorists are also being advised to expect delays.
Officials say the winter road is currently operating at its maximum weight limit of 45,000 kilograms, while the La Loche Winter Trail remains at a maximum load limit of 27,500 kilograms.
Drivers are being reminded to stay on the right side of the road, particularly on hills, and that heavy vehicles such as fuel trucks and semi trailers require permits before using the route.
Updated information on road conditions, permits and safety tips is available through the municipality’s winter road resources, as well as a dedicated hotline.
