FORT McMURRAY. — Leaders and residents in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo gathered to celebrate Black History Month with a gala recognizing community leadership, cultural contribution and service across the region.
The Black History Month Gala and Awards Night highlighted what organizers described as a growing legacy of mentorship, inclusion and community building in Fort McMurray and surrounding communities. The event was hosted by Rehoboth Alliance/FM, a local organization that has worked since 2013 to support youth, women and families through cultural programming, education initiatives and mentorship opportunities.
Municipal representatives praised the organization’s role in creating safe spaces for connection and growth, saying the evening reflected the region’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Speakers described the event as a celebration of resilience, leadership and Black excellence within Wood Buffalo.
Community leaders also recognized local residents whose work has earned national attention. Organizers pointed to members of the Fort McMurray community who have been named among the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women, calling the recognition a reflection of years of service and mentorship.
Among those honoured was 2026 recipient Ijeoma-Gladys Uche-Ezeala, recognized for leadership and commitment to education that supporters say has made a meaningful difference for families in the community.
The region also acknowledged past honourees with ties to Wood Buffalo, including Vincella Thompson and Regina Oppon, both recognized in 2020.
Organizers said the annual celebrations aim to highlight achievements while encouraging continued community engagement and support for programs that promote opportunity and inclusion across the region.
