FORT McMURRAY, — Snow removal crews are continuing work across parts of Fort McMurray this week after more than 20 centimetres of snow fell over the weekend.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says Winter Maintenance Zones 1 and 2 will be active for snow removal from March 9 to March 13, with on-street parking restrictions in effect.
The work involves loading snow into trucks and hauling it to disposal sites, a process that takes longer and requires more equipment than standard snow plowing. Municipal officials say the operation typically takes place only once or twice each winter.
Residents living in the two zones may welcome the work after the heavy weekend snowfall left significant windrows and snowbanks along residential streets.
Subzones 3 and 4 are expected to be scheduled for snow removal the following week, from March 16 to March 20.
The municipality says temporary no-parking signs will also be posted on some primary, secondary and tertiary routes where snow removal is planned. Signs are typically placed about 24 hours before work begins.
Officials are also reminding residents to help keep garbage and recycling collection on schedule by placing bins in front of windrows rather than on top of snowbanks and clearing lids of snow and ice.
Blocked bins may not be collected.
Residents are also asked to clear sidewalks and driveways within 48 hours of a snowfall and to move empty bins off the street after collection.
Updates on winter maintenance zones are available through municipal alerts, digital signs at neighbourhood entrances and the municipality’s website. Residents can also contact Pulse for more information.
