EDMONTON — Another citizen-led recall petition has failed. This one aimed at unseating Alberta Premier Danielle Smith as the MLA for Brooks–Medicine Hat.
The campaign gathered about 2,300 signatures, well short of the roughly 12,000 needed to trigger the next step in Alberta’s legislated recall process.
Two other recall efforts targeting members of Smith’s United Conservative caucus also fell short this week. A petition aimed at Technology and Innovation Minister Nate Glubish did not meet the required threshold, while another effort targeting former environment minister Rebecca Schulz ended after collecting only a few hundred signatures.
Under Alberta’s recall legislation, petitioners have three months to gather signatures equal to 60 per cent of the votes cast in a constituency during the previous provincial election. If the threshold is met, a vote is held to determine whether the MLA keeps their seat.
The latest results mean 20 of roughly two dozen recall petitions launched against members of Smith’s caucus since late last year have failed.
While recall efforts have so far been unsuccessful, one citizen-led initiative has recently advanced through Elections Alberta.
The “Alberta Forever Canadian” petition, which affirms Alberta’s place within Canada and aims to counter a small but vocal separatist movement in the province, is the only citizen-led initiative approved to proceed under Elections Alberta’s process to date.
