FORT McMURRAY — Transit riders in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will see changes to several bus routes and schedules beginning March 20 as the municipality adjusts service based on rider feedback and travel patterns.
The updates include changes to Route 1, Route 3, school bus routes and the Transit On Demand system. Municipal officials say the adjustments are intended to improve reliability, reduce delays and better align service with school schedules and peak travel times.
Route 1, which serves Thickwood and Gregoire, will see expanded weekend service and operate on a consistent daily schedule. The final two evening trips will also be rerouted to add service along Signal Road and Silin Forest Road.
Route 3, which connects MacDonald Island and Abasand, will see schedule adjustments aimed at reducing travel times and delays.
Transit On Demand service will also be expanded during peak afternoon periods to increase availability for riders.
The municipality says Specialized Transit trips will be adjusted to shorten travel times and help prevent riders from missing appointments. The changes follow a council motion earlier this week directing that Specialized Transit travel times not exceed twice the length of a direct trip.
Several school bus routes will also be modified.
Morning service to Westwood Community High School will begin earlier on Routes 101, 103 and 105 to better match the school’s start time.
Route 200 serving Holy Trinity Catholic High School will add service along Lougheed Drive.
At École McTavish High School, Route 301 will add morning and afternoon service to Parsons Creek, while Routes 302 and 303 will be combined for morning service but remain separate in the afternoon.
Routes serving Father Patrick Mercredi High School will begin earlier in the morning and depart earlier in the afternoon on several routes.
Route 500 serving Fort McMurray Composite High School will add morning service to Abasand.
The municipality says the changes are based on data collected since the launch of the Transit Master Plan in August, including ridership patterns, route usage and timing.
Updated schedules and route details are available through the municipality’s transit website.
