FORT McMURRAY — Keyano College is launching a new signature fundraising event this year aimed at supporting students and continuing a long-standing tradition of community support for education in the Wood Buffalo region.
College officials say the event, called Encore: A Signature Evening of Impact, will build on the legacy of the Keyano Gala, which for decades brought together community leaders, alumni and partners to raise money for student programs and celebrate the role of education in the region.
The college said the tradition dates back to 1978, when community leaders gathered at Keyano’s Heavy Industrial Campus to support an $18-million vision for post-secondary education in Fort McMurray.
By 1981, the celebration had moved to the newly opened Keyano Theatre, where the first formal gala was held. Organizers say Canadian Brass performed as guests entered while culinary students prepared the meal, establishing a tradition that continued for decades.
“Over the years, the gala became one of Fort McMurray’s most anticipated annual events,” the college said in a release announcing the new event. “Community leaders, partners, alumni and supporters gathered each year to celebrate the impact of education while enjoying unforgettable performances.”
The college says Encore will mark an evolution of the gala tradition as Keyano concludes celebrations marking its 60th anniversary.
Organizers say the event will feature a new venue, a four-course meal and live entertainment, with a program highlighting the experiences of Keyano students and alumni.
“The night will centre on the powerful stories of Keyano students and alumni whose journeys reflect what is possible when a community invests in education,” the college said.
Several sponsors have already signed on to support the event, including Suncor as presenting sponsor.
Birch Mountain Enterprises, the Fort McKay Group of Companies and the Fort McKay First Nation are listed as entertainment sponsors, while APE Maintenance is sponsoring the alumni impact component and SMS Equipment is sponsoring the culinary experience.
The college says additional sponsorship opportunities are available for organizations and individuals interested in supporting student success.
Further announcements about the event, including ticket sales, entertainment and program details, are expected in the coming months.
