2022 Regional Emergency Services Firetruck
FORT McMURRAY — The Fort McMurray Fire Department is recruiting for more than a dozen full-time positions as it looks to expand staffing this spring.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says openings include training officers, firefighter-paramedics and advanced care paramedics. Applications are also being accepted for a firefighter cadet program aimed at paramedics seeking fire training.
Acting regional fire chief Kelly Roberts said the recruitment comes as the department looks to build capacity and meet growing service demands.
“It’s an exciting time for the department — we’re moving forward, and we’re looking for people to help us build the future,” Roberts said in a statement.
Officials say a priority will be hiring additional training officers to support increased training needs. The roles involve developing and delivering programs for fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations and hazardous materials response.
Firefighter-paramedics provide advanced life support and respond to a range of emergencies, including fires, medical calls, rescues and hazardous materials incidents.
The department says its integrated fire and emergency medical service offers opportunities for specialized work, including air medical response, technical rescue and dangerous goods teams.
The firefighter cadet program is designed for registered paramedics without fire training and provides paid training toward firefighter certification.
The municipality says applicants must meet minimum requirements, with some positions open to students completing paramedicine programs who can write national certification exams by early May.
More information on the recruitment process is available through the municipality’s website.
