FORT McMURRAY — The Fort McMurray Public School Division is launching a new program aimed at supporting student-athletes with a blend of academic and athletic development.
The initiative, currently operating under the working title Wood Buffalo Athletics Academy, is set to begin in the 2026-27 school year and will serve students in grades 4 through 8.
School officials say the program is designed to combine high-level athletic training with classroom instruction, allowing students to balance competitive sports with their education.
An open house is scheduled for March 23 at 7 p.m. at MacDonald Island Park, where families can learn more about the program, meet division leadership and ask questions about curriculum and expectations.
Superintendent Annalee Nutter says the academy is intended to support students committed to both academics and athletics, while helping them build skills such as discipline and resilience.
Families interested in enrolling students in the inaugural year must submit applications by April 10.
