EDMONTON — Alberta’s agriculture minister is heading to China on a trade mission aimed at expanding market access for the province’s agri-food sector and strengthening ties with one of its most important export destinations.
RJ Sigurdson is scheduled to travel to China in the coming days, where he will meet with government officials, importers and industry representatives while promoting Alberta’s agricultural products at a major international trade show.
The province says the mission will focus on growing demand for Alberta’s agri-food exports, including canola, wheat, barley and value-added products, while reinforcing its position as a reliable supplier to global markets.
China is Alberta’s third-largest agri-food export market after the United States and Japan, with exports valued at about $1.4 billion in 2025. Key products shipped to China include canola seed, wheat, barley and canola oil, reflecting strong demand for Alberta-grown commodities.
Officials say China’s role as the world’s largest oilseed importer presents significant opportunities for Alberta producers, particularly as more than half of Canada’s canola exports are destined for the Chinese market.
During the trip, Sigurdson will attend the China International Consumer Products Expo in Haikou, where Canada is being featured as the country of honour. The event is considered a key gateway for international companies looking to expand into Chinese markets.
The minister is also expected to participate in investment roundtables in Beijing and meet with agricultural importers and industry associations to explore new partnerships and promote Alberta’s products.
Officials say the mission is the first formal visit to China by an Alberta elected official since 2018 and reflects a renewed focus on strengthening trade relationships in Asia.
The province says expanding agri-food exports is a priority as it looks to diversify markets, support producers and drive long-term economic growth across Alberta’s agriculture sector.
