EDMONTON — Alberta’s government is providing $500,000 in grants to support firefighter training across the province, with funding distributed to 90 recipients including municipalities, First Nations and Métis Settlements.
The funding is part of the Fire Services Training Program, which helps local fire departments and personnel access training aligned with industry standards and tailored to community needs.
Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams said the investment will help ensure firefighters have the skills required to respond safely and effectively when emergencies arise.
Training supported through the program includes ice water rescues, hazardous materials response and other specialized courses aimed at improving preparedness and response capacity.
Drayton Bussiere, president of the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association, said the funding strengthens fire services across Alberta and supports firefighters in protecting their communities.
The province says the program also helps test and certify firefighters to ensure their credentials meet standardized requirements.
All municipalities, First Nations and Métis Settlements in Alberta are eligible to apply for the grants, and remain responsible for determining local fire service needs, including staffing, budgets and training.
The government says its broader support for fire services includes developing and enforcing the provincial fire code, administering emergency responder service medals and overseeing certification aligned with national firefighter qualification standards.
