A disaster response team that helped Fort McMurray recover after the 2016 wildfire is back in town this time, to help prevent another one.
Team Rubicon, a volunteer group made up of military veterans, first responders, and emergency workers, is in the Thickwood area working on a major FireSmart project.
Crews began work this week in the Timberline neighbourhood, thinning and pruning trees and clearing out debris in high-risk forested areas. The goal is to reduce the wildfire threat.
The project will run until May 9, with activity visible along Timberline Drive over the next couple of weeks.
Team Rubicon’s work is funded by the Canadian Red Cross and supported by local partners, including Keyano College, the Royal Canadian Legion, and Acden Environmental.
FireSmart program manager Chris Pottie says this kind of hands-on work, along with other local wildfire prevention efforts, will help improve the region’s resilience.
