New hardware mega-store to open in 2026, bringing 150 jobs to the region
FORT McMURRAY, AB — Home Depot is expanding northward with plans to open its newest Canadian store in Fort McMurray in spring 2026. The 80,000-square-foot location will be the company’s northernmost store in the country and is expected to create approximately 150 new jobs.
Construction is already underway at the site on Quarry Ridge Drive. Once complete, the store will feature a large garden centre, tool rental area, specialty showrooms, and a pickup zone for online orders. It will be the 183rd Home Depot in Canada and the 28th in Alberta.
Vinod Nalajala, President of The Home Depot Canada, said the decision to invest in Fort McMurray reflects confidence in the region’s long-term growth. “Fort McMurray is a dynamic community in the heart of a region experiencing momentum from the forestry, construction, oil and gas sectors,” he said. “The store opening is an exciting step forward in support of the Wood Buffalo region.”
Mayor Sandy Bowman welcomed the announcement, calling it a vote of confidence in the local economy. “Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo is a great place to do business, work, grow and raise a family,” Bowman said. “We look forward to welcoming one of the world’s largest retailers and the opportunities it creates for residents.”
The company also announced a $10,000 grant to local nonprofit Wood Homes through The Home Depot Canada Foundation, which supports youth housing and community services. Wood Homes is expected to become a partner in future fundraising efforts tied to the store’s Orange Door Project campaigns.
Home Depot has operated in Canada for more than 30 years and employs over 30,000 associates nationwide. The company currently supports more than 5,200 jobs across Alberta.
