Neighbour hailed as hero after risking injury to alert residents on Canada Day
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Some people say they have great neighbours, but in this case, there is no doubt. A courageous bystander is being praised for his quick action and bravery after climbing the outside of a four-storey apartment building on Canada Day to alert residents to a fire.
The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on July 1 at a Gregoire neighbourhood apartment. Multiple 911 calls had reported a fire on a third-floor balcony. Before fire crews arrived, the bystander scaled the building, knocked on a patio door to alert those inside, and helped extinguish the flames.
The man sustained minor injuries but is being credited with preventing more serious damage or harm. The fire was later determined to have been caused by improperly discarded smoking material. No other injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the balcony area.
