Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo aims to host 2028 Alberta Summer Games with united bid effort
FORT McMURRAY — Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is gearing up to bring one of the province’s most inspiring sporting events back to the region. With unanimous support from Council, the Regional Municipality is preparing a formal bid to host the 2028 Alberta Summer Games and is now calling on residents to help make it happen.
A Bid Committee is being formed to craft a compelling proposal that will showcase the region’s athletic facilities, volunteer spirit and community pride. The RMWB is inviting individuals involved in sport, business, education, arts or community development to apply before July 14 at 12 p.m. and help shape what could be a game-changing opportunity for the region.
The Alberta Summer Games, held every two years, bring together youth aged 11 to 16 from across the province who qualify through zone playoffs to compete in a range of individual and team sports. For nearly five decades, the Games have promoted athletic excellence, teamwork and healthy living, while leaving a lasting legacy in host communities through upgraded facilities, boosted tourism and enhanced volunteer networks.
“Our region has a strong history of successfully hosting major events at the provincial, national and international levels,” said a municipal spokesperson. “Hosting the 2028 Alberta Summer Games would be a chance to celebrate that legacy and build on it.”
If successful, the bid is expected to deliver a significant economic boost and further strengthen Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo’s profile as a premier sport-hosting destination. The Games would draw athletes, families, officials and spectators from every corner of Alberta, providing a showcase of regional talent and hospitality.
The Bid Committee will play a vital role in preparing for the August 29, 2025, submission deadline. Members are expected to attend three scheduled meetings on July 16, July 30 and August 13, and stay available by email throughout the summer to help finalize the proposal. Local insight, event experience and a passion for community are all welcome assets for applicants.
“This is an opportunity to come together as a community, show our pride and bring something truly special to our youth,” the Municipality stated in the announcement. “Let’s show Alberta why Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo is the perfect host.”
Applications can be submitted online at rmwb.ca, where more information is also available. For questions, contact Pulse at 780-743-7000 or rmwb.ca/pulse.
