Fire danger eases in Fort McMurray area but remains high in the south
FORT McMURRAY, AB — Rain and cooler temperatures have helped reduce wildfire activity in northern Alberta, but fire danger remains very high in the southern part of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).
As of the weekend, the Fort McMurray Forest Area is reporting a moderate fire danger rating. Five wildfires are currently active in the region. One is classified as being held, while four are under control. None of the fires in this region pose a threat to communities.
In theLac La Biche Forest Area, which includes the southern portion of the RMWB, is facing very high fire danger and a fire advisory remains in effect. Three wildfires in that region are classified as out of control, including a large fire near Janvier and Conklin that remains just under 68,000 hectares in size. Fire crews are expected to continue working on that fire throughout the summer.
With wildfire conditions improving in many areas of the province, Alberta has lifted many of thee fire bans. However, officials are continuing to urge caution in areas where the risk remains elevated.
