Man dead following RCMP-involved shooting in Grande Prairie; ASIRT investigating
GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB. — A man is dead following a police-involved shooting late Friday night in Grande Prairie.
RCMP say officers attempted to stop an erratic driver shortly before midnight on July 18. The vehicle fled and became stuck in the mud after leaving the road. When officers approached, police say the male driver allegedly produced a firearm, leading to a confrontation.
At least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the man. Officers attempted life-saving measures and STARS air ambulance was notified, but the man was pronounced dead when EMS arrived on scene.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the police response. The RCMP says it has also initiated an internal review to examine training, policy, and the duty status of the involved officer.
RCMP say they are fully cooperating with the ASIRT investigation.
