Band Office for Fort McMurray 468 First Nation
Facility supported by Suncor will serve as cultural and community hub
FORT McMURRAY, AB. — Fireworks and traditional dancing marked the grand opening of the Nikinan Community Centre on Treaty 8 territory, offering a new gathering place for the Fort McMurray 468 First Nation.
Meaning “Our Place” in Cree, the facility represents pride and ownership for the Nation and its more than 900 members, located near Anzac on Gregoire Lake southeast of Fort McMurray.
The centre houses the Nation’s administration, member services and community wellness offices, along with a gym, fitness area, indoor playground, gift shop and coffee shop. Leaders say it will serve as a space for Elders, youth and families to share culture, stories and traditions.
Suncor supported the project through a long‑term sponsorship and commemorated the July 4 ribbon‑cutting by presenting the Nation with a bison hide and skull. Sandy Martin, Suncor’s senior vice‑president for regional execution, said the gift symbolizes friendship, respect and the company’s commitment to economic reconciliation with Indigenous partners.
The Fort McMurray 468 First Nation has previously partnered with Suncor on projects including the Astisiy equity initiative and the opening of a Petro‑Canada station on its Gregoire Lake Reserve in 2015.
