Service is being restored to a pipeline after it leaked near the Fort McMurray International Airport.
Inter Pipeline detected an ‘incident’ in one of their systems on August 29 which caused around 90 m3 of diluent to escape.
The company was given approval by the Alberta Energy Regulator approved to install a 400-meter bypass pipeline which has enabled the western portion of the pipeline to safely transport diluent north of Fort McMurray.
The leak had forced Imperial Oil to shut down production at their Kearl Lake site. The company noted as soon as the pipeline was fixed they would re-start operations.
Meanwhile, Inter Pipeline continues to repair the main pipeline and conduct remediation work.
Residents are still being asked to avoid the area and the Saprae Creek Trails until all work in the area is finished.
The company continues to investigate the incident to determine the cause.
