Police are officially charging a 20-year-old woman, Judith Janvier (PR. John Vee Aye), from the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation with arson and break and enter. The charges stem from the story we told you about yesterday, where two homes were set ablaze on the First Nation early Tuesday. One home was completely destroyed, and another seriously damaged. Janvier has been released on conditions and will appear in Fort McMurray court on September 24.
No injuries reported, one home destroyed
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Wood Buffalo RCMP say a woman has been arrested after two homes caught fire early Tuesday on Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, south of Fort McMurray.
Police and Regional Emergency Services were called just after 12:30 a.m. to two residences in Janvier. Both homes were engulfed when crews arrived. One was destroyed, while the other sustained significant damage before firefighters put out the flames.
RCMP say no one was inside either home and no injuries were reported. Investigators believe the fires were deliberately set.
A 20-year-old woman from Chipewyan Prairie First Nation was arrested at the scene and remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.
The RCMP General Investigation and Forensic Identification sections are assisting with the investigation. Police are urging the public to report suspicious activity and say anonymous tips can be made through Crime Stoppers.
