Alberta NDP says youth unemployment is highest in the country
CALGARY — Alberta’s New Democrats say the province’s latest jobs numbers show the United Conservative government is failing to create stability for workers and investors.
Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi said Friday Alberta now has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country, with losses of more than 14,000 jobs in August alone. He said the rate has risen by nearly three points since Premier Danielle Smith took office and is well above neighbouring Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
Nenshi criticized the government’s job strategy as vague and ineffective, and argued that Alberta’s reputation for investment has been damaged by instability and policies he said undermine confidence. Youth unemployment, he added, is the highest in Canada, with young men seeing the steepest increase under Smith’s leadership.
The NDP leader said his party would focus on stabilizing the province’s reputation, attracting investment, and supporting education and training programs to prepare people for future employment.
