Fort McMurray to hold firefighter memorial on September 11
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — A memorial service will be held in Fort McMurray today to honour firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Fort McMurray Honour Guard and members of the local fire department will host the public ceremony at Fire Hall 5 on Saprae Creek Trail. Seating begins at 10 a.m. with the service starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by light refreshments.
The annual event falls on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States, when thousands of people were killed after hijacked planes struck the World Trade Centre in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a Pennsylvania field.
Hundreds of firefighters rushed into the Twin Towers to help rescue victims. When the towers collapsed, 343 New York City firefighters were among those who died — the largest single loss of emergency responders in U.S. history.
Organizers of today’s ceremony say it will both commemorate that sacrifice and express gratitude to those who continue to serve the community in dangerous and demanding circumstances.
