Deadline nears for candidates in Wood Buffalo municipal election
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Candidates for mayor, municipal council and local school boards have less than two weeks to gather the required paperwork before the official nomination date in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Nominations will be accepted until noon on Sept. 22 under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act. Vacancies include one mayor, 10 council seats across four wards, seven public school board trustee positions and five Catholic school trustee positions.
Those seeking to run must submit nomination forms, financial information and consent for disclosure. Candidates for mayor must also submit a $250 fee, while council candidates are required to pay $100.
All paperwork must be filed in person in Fort McMurray. Late submissions will not be accepted.
Nomination forms and further information are available on the RMWB website and through Alberta Municipal Affairs. Interested candidates are encouraged to file early by arranging an appointment with the municipal elections office.
The municipal election will set the leadership for both the RMWB and its school divisions for the next term.
