Alberta Wildfire, Forecast Fire Danger Map
FORT McMURRAY, AB. — The wildfire danger in northeastern Alberta is being rated as very high heading into the weekend, with hot and dry conditions expected to continue.
Alberta Wildfire has issued advisories for both the Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche forest areas, which include southern parts of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo such as Janvier and Conklin. Officials say the warm weather means wildfires can ignite easily and spread quickly.
Under the advisory, existing fire permits remain valid but new permits will only be issued on a case-by-case basis for essential burning. Safe campfires are allowed, but fireworks, exploding targets and any burning without a valid permit are prohibited.
Alberta Wildfire is urging residents and visitors to use caution when outdoors. All campfires must be fully extinguished before leaving, using the “soak, stir and soak again” method. Landowners who conducted burns earlier in the summer are encouraged to check their sites to ensure smouldering piles are completely cold.
Officials also caution that as fall grasses dry out, the risk of flare-ups increases. Extra care is advised during agricultural and industrial activities.
