Wildfire danger remains very high in Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche forest areas
FORT MCMURRAY, AB. — Alberta Wildfire officials say the risk of fire remains very high in the Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche forest areas as hot and dry conditions persist.
In the Fort McMurray region, two wildfires remain active but are under control and do not threaten communities. Since the start of the year, 61 wildfires have burned nearly 79,500 hectares in the area. Officials are reminding residents to avoid fire-starting activities and to make sure campfires are fully extinguished.
Smoke from wildfires burning across Canada is affecting air quality in the Fort McMurray region. Alberta Health advises residents to limit outdoor activity during smoky conditions and to call Health Link at 811 if they experience respiratory problems.
In the Lac La Biche forest area, which includes southern sections of the RMWB, including Janvier and Conklin, 11 wildfires are burning. One near the Winefred River remains out of control at about 3,300 hectares but does not pose a threat to communities or infrastructure. Firefighters are using helicopters, heavy equipment and airtankers to limit its spread.
Since January, 221 wildfires have scorched more than 78,000 hectares in the Lac La Biche area. A fire advisory remains in effect, which restricts new permits and limits burning to essential needs.
Officials are also warning farmers and equipment operators to use caution in fields where dry conditions can spark blazes.
