FORT MCMURRAY–The provincial government has announced a tentative deal with 51 thousand teachers in Alberta.
The deal has to be ratified first, and the Alberta Teachers Association is working on setting up that vote in the next few days.
No details of the agreement have been made public yet. The government’s latest offer of a 12 percent wage increase over four years included a pledge to hire 3,000 more teachers.
Teachers has balked at that offer, and it’s not clear yet what changes were made to the offer to bring about the tentative contract.
Teachers were looking for help reducing class sizes, and more support for students with complex needs.
The Minister of Finance Nate Horner said in a statement that “the offer is good for Alberta’s education system”.
The deal comes less than two weeks before deadline set by teachers to start a strike.
