FORT McMURRAY, AB. – The wildfire danger is extreme in Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan and very high in Fort McMurray as hot, dry weather persists with no rain in the forecast.
Alberta Wildfire says two wildfires are currently burning in the Fort McMurray Forest Area, both classified as under control. Firefighters are also helping battle a mutual aid fire about 60 kilometres southeast of Fort Smith. That blaze, identified as MNZ002, is estimated at 30 hectares and listed as out of control. Officials say no active wildfires are threatening communities.
Since Jan. 1, 61 wildfires have burned nearly 79,404 hectares in the region. Smoke from fires burning across the country is creating hazy conditions locally, and health officials urge residents to limit time outdoors when smoke levels are high.
A fire restriction is in effect for the Fort McMurray Forest Area, banning fireworks, exploding targets and outdoor wood fires on public land. Safe campfires are still permitted on private property and in designated rings at provincial campgrounds.
Officials remind hunters that random backcountry campfires are not allowed under the restriction and urge residents to fully extinguish fires before leaving them. Off-highway vehicle users are also advised to clear debris from machines frequently to avoid ignitions.
Residents can check the Alberta Wildfire Status app or Alberta Fire Bans website for updates.
