FORT MCMURRAY–Alberta’s teachers have rejected the tentative contract reached with the provincial government last week.
After three days of voting, 43,362 teachers cast a ballot, with almost 90 percent of teachers rejecting the deal. Just over ten percent voted in favor.
The Alberta Teachers Association had said they plan to go ahead and begin strike action Monday, October 6th.
The now rejected deal was reached last week and included a 12 percent pay raise over four years, and a government commitment to hire three thousand more teachers.
The vote results were released Monday evening, with the following breakdown:
| Votes | Per Cent* | |
|---|---|---|
| Reject MOA | 38,113 | 89.5% |
| Accept MOA | 4,479 | 10.5% |
| Abstained | 770 | |
| Total Votes | 43,362 | |
