FORT MCMURRAY, AB.— Residents in Saprae Creek Estates, Draper and the surrounding area will soon have another chance to hear directly from the candidates seeking their votes in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s municipal election.
The Saprae Creek Residents Association is hosting a candidates forum on Oct. 8 at Vista Ridge, starting at 6:30 p.m. The event will bring together both mayoral hopefuls as well as the two candidates competing in Ward 3. Jenna Hamilton-Giles of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce will moderate the evening.
This will mark the second debate between the mayoral candidates, following their first meeting on Oct. 1 at a Chamber of Commerce event in Fort McMurray. That discussion centred on business issues, but the Oct. 8 forum is expected to turn toward topics specific to Ward 3 such as rural services, safety, and infrastructure, along with broader concerns of local residents.
Ward 3 incumbent councillor Stu Wigle will face off against challenger Sarah Hollands. The pair last debated at an all-candidates forum on Sept. 17 at Landmark Cinemas in Fort McMurray, where they presented their visions for representing the ward that includes Saprae Creek and Draper.
For many voters, the Vista Ridge forum will be the last chance to compare the candidates side by side before advance polls open. Advance voting in Ward 3 is set for Oct. 15 and 16, with the election approaching later in the month.
The debate is being billed by organizers as an opportunity for residents to ask direct questions about issues close to home, ranging from roads and emergency response to recreation and growth in rural hamlets.
The forum takes place at Vista Ridge, located at 1 Spruce Valley Drive in Saprae Creek Estates.
