RCMP seized OHVs
FORT McMURRAY – Three electric dirt bikes have been seized by Wood Buffalo RCMP following reports of reckless off-highway vehicle use in Fort McMurray neighbourhoods.
Police say residents have recently reported dirt bikes, off-highway vehicles and e-scooters speeding through residential streets, riding through parks and performing stunts in public areas, raising safety and noise concerns.
On Oct. 7, around 2 p.m., officers observed three electric dirt bikes speeding on sidewalks and performing stunts near Syncrude Athletic Park. Police did not pursue the riders due to public safety risks but used drones to track them. The bikes were stopped near École McTavish High School and on Millennium Drive in Timberlea.
The bikes were unregistered and uninsured and have been seized. The riders, all youths, were identified and their parents contacted. No charges have been laid.
RCMP remind residents that off-highway vehicles are banned on roads in Fort McMurray except within the Abasand neighbourhood and are not allowed on sidewalks, green spaces or trails.
Police continue to patrol with municipal bylaw officers to address illegal off-highway vehicle use. More information on safe and legal riding is available on the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s website.
