Advanced voting continues across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, and officials want parents and caregivers to know it’s perfectly fine to bring children along.
With the ongoing provincial teachers’ strike creating extra challenges for families, the RMWB says parents shouldn’t worry about finding childcare when they go to vote. Children are welcome at both advance polls and on election day, and those under 18 can even accompany their parents inside the voting booth.
“While we ask that parents supervise children, there’s no issue with children under 18 accompanying parents behind the voting screen,” said Greg Bennett, spokesperson for the RMWB. “It’s a great opportunity to observe democracy in action.”
Advance voting is open at several locations across the region. In Fort McMurray, polls are available at the Syncrude Athletic Park Clubhouse, 101 Cartier Road, from October 7 to 10 and October 14 to 17, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Voters can also cast their ballots at the Oil Sands Discovery Centre, 515 MacKenzie Boulevard, on October 10 and 11.
In Ward 2, residents of Fort Chipewyan can vote at Mamawi Hall, 128 Cardinal Avenue, on October 15 and 16. The Fort McKay Community Centre, located on Range Road 110A, will also be open on those same dates. Fort Fitzgerald residents are encouraged to vote at any other community’s advance voting location.
For Ward 3, covering Draper and Saprae Creek Estates, voting will take place at Vista Ridge, 1 Spruce Valley Drive, on October 15 and 16.
In Ward 4, advance polls will be held on October 15 and 16 at the Anzac Recreation Centre, 237 Stony Mountain Road in Anzac, as well as at the Conklin Multiplex, 244 Northland Drive, and the Janvier Municipal Office, 110 Janvier Drive.
Election day is October 20. Due to new provincial regulations requiring ballots to be counted by hand, the RMWB does not expect to release final results for several days.
