Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions about the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Mayoral Candidate, Lance Bussiers. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: Why are you running/what is your motivation?
My decision to run for another 4 years is about my commitment to our great region and a vision for the future of the Municipality.
I am proud of my record and my stance on key issues that were brought forward in the last 4 years. I remain steadfast to advancing fiscal responsibility, sustainable development, economic diversification, asset management and the well being of all our residents.
My vision remains a safe, prosperous, and inclusive community that prides itself with opportunities for all.
Harvard: What qualifications make you suited for office?
I bring 8 years of municipal experience having already served 2 terms (2013 – 2017 & 2021 – 2025). In addition to my Councillor service, I have a long resume of serving and volunteering on a number of other boards in the community over the past 45 years.
Having lived in the region for over 60 years I bring history and knowledge to the table, as a retired business owner, I certainly understand collaboration, transparency, budgets and fiscal responsibility.
The roles of a councillor (Represent, Policy Maker and Steward) at times are very difficult, however, I believe in my ability and skill set to make the right decision. Many, if not all, of council’s decisions will have a lasting impact on the Region long after our time in office. We need to do our best to make the Right decision.
Harvard: What three issues will you bring before Council that are of key interest to you?
As noted above, I will continue to advocate for Fiscal Responsibility. We need to be much more transparent and accountable when it comes to the Taxpayer’s dollars. The manner in which we conduct our budget deliberations requires significant improvement. A budget of approximately 500 Million Dollars should never be completed in 2 days. Our residents deserve better. They should have some understanding of the value they are receiving for their dollar. Council can do a much better job.
Asset Management is an issue I brought forward early in my term, however, the subject matter never got legs until this year. We need a better understanding of the TRUE costs when it comes to maintaining and sustaining our asset portfolio.
It is impossible to properly prepare a realistic or accurate budget if these real costs are not considered.
Thirdly, I would really like to see a meaningful push towards beautifying our region. Highway 63, when entering our region should be much more inviting for our residents and our visitors. The absence of any real road maintenance, grass cutting and litter collection is unsightly and disappointing. Although it is a provincial matter, there is nothing preventing the Municipality from forming a partnership or taking over the management from the province.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Municipal Government Act?
Having already served for 8 years, I believe I have a good understanding of the MGA. However, I am never opposed to learning and always open to listening.
