Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions about the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Catholic School Trustee Candidate, Jeff Walsh. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: What do you see as the key issues facing students and teachers today?
The Catholic schools in Fort McMurray have grown tremendously, but this presents challenges which affect both teachers and students. Large class sizes and growing workload on teachers is almost unmanageable. Teachers are underpaid and overworked in many cases. The large class sizes have our teachers and EAs stretched thin, and this inevitably affects kids with complex needs. These issues are further intensified by inadequate funding which remains among the lowest per capita in Canada. New teachers face burnout and attrition, with many teachers considering leaving the profession. Early career teachers are particularly vulnerable. 79% of new teachers lack a formal mentor and report being bogged down by unnecessary bureaucracy. Students feel overwhelmed, anxious, and stressed. Kids more than ever need mental health supports which have been especially underserved in recent years. I think that with the large number of students we have been forced to water down faith based education. But parents and students come to Catholic education for an education that not just prepares students for the job market, but for education that touches the soul. I believe that we need to advocate for and advance the Distinctive Character of Catholic Education in Fort McMurray and beyond.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Alberta Education Act and the limitations placed on trustees?
I am familiar with the Alberta Education Act and the limitations placed on trustees; Trustees are not teachers or curriculum writers, do not act independently of the board, and not involved in the day-to-day management of the school.
Harvard: What support will you offer the Superintendent in implementing the board’s strategic direction?
I would support the superintendent in fostering a culture of collaboration between the school-home-parish triad. Offer strategic leadership planning which supports the long-term advancement of educational excellence and high quality faith formation.
Harvard: Do you have children in the system, and how have their experiences influenced your perspective?
I have three children, two are in Catholic elementary. I have been pleased with Catholic elementary in this city. There are wonderful teachers, EA’s, principals, Catholic formation is evident, and liturgy is integrated. I understand that faith-based education is worth fighting for. I intend to advocate far and wide and support our Catholic school division through stewardship and strategic leadership, to help realize our full potential.
