Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions about the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Mayoral Candidate, Funke Banjoko. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: Why are you running/what is your motivation?
I am running for Council because I believe in building a stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable community for all residents. Over the years, I have seen both the challenges and opportunities in our municipality, and I want to use my experience and commitment to public service to ensure every voice is heard, and every decision made contributes to a better future for RMWB and residents.
* I am passionate about giving back to this community that has given me and my family a place that is home and where we have benefitted in many ways.
* I love the role and look forward to each day connecting with people, being a part of the solutions and that’s why I “show up”.
Finally, there are some great works that I have successfully initiated through motions, and I would like to see them move to implementation successfully. These include but not limited to the following:
- Inclusive Spaces: Special Needs Facilities (intentionally support people with disabilities).
- Localization of jobs, working with our industry partners for jobs and strengthening our economy.
- Youth Microgrants – youth empowerment
- Reinstating the Family Medicine Residency Program to enhance medical services especially specialists.
- Poverty Reduction Plan.
- Continue the advocacy for the completion of the twinning of the remaining part of Highways 63 & 28 (all the way to Edmonton).
Harvard: What qualifications make you suited for office?
I bring a blend of professional expertise and hands-on community service. As a Certified Supply Chain Management Professional with over two decades of experience in strategic planning, negotiation, and managing teams and managing costs/contracts (budgets)
I understand the need for accountability, transparency, and fiscal responsibility. I am fully aware of our priorities as a region and also able to manage changes that come with governance and emerging demands.
My experience on Council for four years has equipped me with practical knowledge of municipal operations and the needs of residents, making me ready to serve effectively from day one. I have built connections within RMWB and Alberta that could only be done with time.
Harvard: What three issues will you bring before Council that are of key interest to you?
- Economic Growth & Infrastructure– ensuring responsible development that meets today’s needs while planning for tomorrow. Diversifying the economy, working with industry partners to ensure localization of jobs, retaining our youths through trades/education, jobs and recreation.
- Fiscal Responsibility– balancing investments in essential services with prudent financial management.
- Inclusive Community Engagement– strengthening connections with residents so that policies reflect diverse voices and priorities.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Municipal Government Act?
How familiar are you with the Municipal Government Act?
I am well-versed in the Municipal Government Act and understand its role as the guiding framework for municipal governance. I have applied it in decision-making, policy review, and Council motions, and I continue to deepen my understanding to ensure that all actions taken are sound, transparent, and aligned with MGA.
I am also well aware of the procedure: administration is to manage the operations while Mayor and council give the directions through our only employee – the Chief Administrative Officer.
