Naheed Neshi visits Harvard Media News for exclusive interview
Fort McMurray — Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says Alberta should stop “playing the victim card” and take the lead on energy, innovation, and the economy.
In an exclusive interview with Jon Tupper of Harvard Media News during a visit to Fort McMurray, Nenshi covered a wide range of topics, including the province’s ongoing teachers strike, energy policy, and Alberta’s role in a changing global market.
Nenshi said he supports the work of the Pathways Alliance, carbon sequestration projects, and continued development of pipelines, arguing that Alberta’s energy expertise positions it to lead global progress rather than follow it. He said Alberta has the people and skills to guide both energy markets and climate solutions, instead of being bystanders to them.
The NDP leader also discussed the need to diversify Alberta’s trade relationships to strengthen long-term economic stability and reduce reliance on fluctuations in the oil and gas sector.
On education, Nenshi said his party stands with teachers and parents who are calling for more resources and smaller class sizes, emphasizing that investment in education is essential to Alberta’s future prosperity.
He added that his caucus is preparing an aggressive fall legislative agenda focused on affordability, education, and responsible energy development — and hinted that Albertans could even see a sudden election if conditions warrant it.
Nenshi’s stop in Fort McMurray was part of a broader provincewide tour to meet residents and hear firsthand about the issues affecting their daily lives.
