FORT McMURRAY — Keyano College will spotlight high level trades training next week with an Electrical Skills Showcase at its Clearwater Campus in Fort McMurray. The free event is scheduled for Monday, November 3 from noon to 3 p.m., and is open to the public, prospective students, parents and industry members.
Visitors will tour state of the art electrical labs, meet instructors and students, and watch hands on demonstrations. The showcase will also highlight Keyano’s connection to the WorldSkills Competition, a global event considered the Olympics of trades and technologies.
Keyano student Keegan Sturge will speak about the extensive training and commitment required to qualify for WorldSkills, where he hopes to represent Canada when the next competition takes place in China in 2026. Organizers say Sturge’s presentation will give attendees an inside look at the discipline and expertise needed to perform at the international level.
The college will also welcome Jason Taylor, an electrical expert with the WorldSkills organization, who will discuss the standards and expectations used to evaluate competitors worldwide. Keyano officials say his involvement demonstrates the strong reputation of trades education in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The event aims to promote skilled trades as a career path in northern Alberta, where demand for electricians and industrial workers continues to grow. Staff will be on site to answer questions and provide information on Keyano’s trades programs, which serve students from Fort McMurray and surrounding communities through its Clearwater Campus and the Suncor Energy Industrial Centre.
Keyano College says the showcase supports its role in meeting industry training needs while helping future students explore rewarding apprenticeship and certification opportunities available close to home.
