FORT McMURRAY— The Alberta RCMP is reminding Albertans to make safety a priority this Halloween as ghosts, superheroes, and witches prepare to fill neighbourhood streets across the province. Officers say a few simple precautions can help ensure a night of fun without fright.
Children are encouraged to wear brightly coloured costumes and add reflective tape or glow sticks to be more visible to drivers after dark. Carrying a flashlight and sticking to well-lit areas can also help them stay safe. Police recommend using makeup instead of masks, since masks can block vision and hearing. If masks are part of a costume, they should be removed when walking between houses or crossing streets.
RCMP advise children to stay on sidewalks, travel on one side of the street at a time, and cross roads only at marked crosswalks or intersections. They also remind young trick-or-treaters never to enter a stranger’s home or vehicle and to travel in groups if not accompanied by an adult.
Adults handing out candy are asked to keep porch or outdoor lights on, remove any tripping hazards from walkways, and distribute only sealed, commercially packaged treats. Parents should check all candy before it’s eaten and keep pets indoors to prevent them from being startled by visitors.
Police are also warning adults attending Halloween parties to plan ahead and never drive impaired. Those who consume alcohol or drugs should arrange a safe ride home through a taxi, rideshare, or designated driver. Officers add that people should avoid taking any substances from strangers and remain aware of their surroundings throughout the night.
The Alberta RCMP says with some preparation and awareness, everyone can help make Halloween a safe, fun, and memorable evening for families across the province.
