Council excellence awards
FORT MCMURRAY — Nominations for Council’s Excellence Awards close on Dec. 3, 2025, and the municipality is urging residents to recognize people making a difference in Wood Buffalo.
The annual awards honour community leaders, young achievers and residents whose actions have had a positive impact. Council selects the recipients in four categories based on recommendations from an advisory panel. Award recipients and their nominators will be invited to a ceremony in the New Year.
The categories are Citizen of the Year, Everyday Hero, Indigenous Advocate and Youth. Citizen of the Year recognizes someone whose contributions as a volunteer or professional have improved quality of life in the region. Everyday Hero recognizes an individual or group whose kindness or actions helped others, including during a single event. Indigenous Advocate honours someone who has made significant contributions to Indigenous communities in Wood Buffalo. The Youth category is open to nominees aged 15 to 34 as of Dec. 31, 2023, whose achievements have improved life in the region or brought positive recognition to it.
Nominees must have lived in Wood Buffalo for at least 12 consecutive months and can only be nominated in one category. They must be aware of their nomination and give consent. Current elected officials, members of the selection panel and posthumous nominations are not eligible. Previous winners cannot be nominated in the same category for five years. Municipal employees may be nominated, but not for activities related to their job.
A selection panel will review all nominations and recommend one recipient in each category to council. Council will make the final decision. Recipients will be announced at a future council meeting.
Residents who need help submitting a nomination can contact Pulse at 780-743-7000 or 1-800-973-9663.
Nominations for the 2026 awards are expected to open early next year.
