FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo earned national recognition for its beautification efforts with three awards at the 2025 Communities in Bloom National and International Awards Ceremonies.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo was honoured with the Community Appearance Award, the Landscape Award, and the Best Downtown Area Award at the Oct. 18 event in Stratford, Ont. Municipalities from across Canada, as well as Ireland, Italy and Slovenia, attended the symposium.
The competition recognizes community participation, environmental sustainability and ongoing improvements to public spaces.
The municipality highlighted several local initiatives that contributed to the awards. These included the Downtown Revitalization Incentive Program, which provides grants to businesses, property owners and community groups to enhance downtown buildings and spaces.
The RMWB’s parks department was recognized for its summer floral displays across the region, while the FireSmart Interpretive Trail was noted for promoting wildfire-resilient landscaping and showcasing sustainable local plant species.
Volunteers with programs such as Nominate Your Neighbour, Adopt-A-Trail and Community Clean-up were also credited for helping keep neighbourhoods clean and welcoming.
Communities in Bloom is a volunteer-driven non-profit group that encourages community pride and improvement through a competitive evaluation process.
