Rich Kruger speaking at Indigenous Energy Summit
FORT McMURRAY — Suncor Energy CEO Rich Kruger has delivered the keynote address at the Spark Indigenous Energy Summit, a national gathering focused on Indigenous leadership in Canada’s energy future.
The two-day summit, created by majority Indigenous-owned partners Mokwateh and Connect Partnership Group, brought together Indigenous leaders, energy executives, investors and policymakers to discuss equity participation, energy security and Indigenous-led economic opportunities.
Summit chair JP Gladu said more than $630 billion in energy and resource projects are proposed across Canada, and Indigenous leadership is essential to ensuring those developments move forward responsibly and with shared benefits.
“We’re at a pivotal moment where reconciliation, economic security and energy development are converging with urgency and purpose,” Gladu said. “This isn’t just opportunity — it’s a turning point for Indigenous economic sovereignty and national prosperity.”
Organizers say the Indigenous energy economy is one of the fastest growing in Canada, with First Nations and Métis communities increasingly investing in renewable energy, pipelines and major infrastructure projects. The summit focused on how partnerships can advance sovereignty, climate goals and long-term prosperity.
Kruger’s conversation covered how clarifying, simplifying and collaborating can help unlock Canada’s full energy potential.
Panels throughout the summit covered topics such as upstream and downstream development, Indigenous equity financing, clean energy innovation and economic reconciliation
